Concept: "The Phadreus House" - Things are seldom what they seem

"Things are not always what they seem; the first appearance deceives many; the intelligence of a few perceives what has been carefully hidden." ---Phaedrus

The site strategy is directly tied to the solar orientation of the house. The scrim acts as a shading device that modulates, reflects, and scatters the light creating areas of brightness and coolness. The play of sunlight on the surface of the scrim causes visual elements to appear and disappear with the glare and exposure throughout the course of the day.

Overlapping geometries create spatial projections that allow inside to outside; inside to inside; and inside to diagonal spatial relationships. The spatial projections expand and contract space thereby increasing the size of program areas and allowing flexibility to the major areas of the house.

The spatial strategy initiates the transformative qualities of the program where by static conditions give way to dynamic event spaces: Garden becomes kitchen; porch becomes living room; bedroom becomes lounge.
