Youth Arts Academy Renovation

Youth Arts Academy (YAA) is located in a 1910, one hundred sixty seven feet long, brick masonry building, primarily three stories high with cellar, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Youth Arts Academy (YAA) offers quality instruction to youth ages 3 to 18 in dance, theater, and African drumming. Over the course of two semesters, classes are offered at the Academy after school and all day on Saturdays. Through its Arts-In-Action program, YAA also provides arts instruction and professional development workshops in theater, dance, and music to an average of 500 to 1000 students attending Brooklyn-based public schools. For students interested in pursuing dance professionally, YAA offers an intense, multi-genre curriculum in dance. They also offer multi-disciplinary packages consisting of three classes for comprehensive arts instruction.

The scope of work included the renovation of restroom facilities, two on the second floor and two on the third floor, and a shower room / locker room on the third floor. The work also included: new flooring and structural repair / replacement, ceiling, lighting, doors, plumbing fixtures, switches, GFCIs receptacles, hand dryers, fittings, partitions, signage, finishes, supply and exhaust ventilation as well as compliance with ADA accessible design standards. Huff + Gooden Architects coordinated with John Nafziger of Big Prototype for the design of custom wall tile as part of the Public Art and Design Initiatives of the NYC Department of Design and Construction's Built/NYC program.
